HYPERMETROPIA
SPECIALISTS WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN OPERATIONS FOR HYPERMETROPIA IN MADRID
At Martínez de Carneros clinic we have specialists with extensive experience in hyperopia operations using refractive surgery (PRK, FEMTO LASIK or ICL), a safe and effective operation to correct it. Depending on the case of the hyperopic patient, it can be treated through the use of converging lenses.
In the case of young patients, they may be able to see close objects clearly due to accommodation (the lens is able to adjust or change its shape). For patients who are 40 years old or over, long-sightedness can be confused with presbyopia or eyestrain. In addition, it can appear alone or together with astigmatism.
WHAT IS HYPERMETROPIA?
Hyperopia hyperopia is a refractive defect or abnormality characterized by poor near and far vision. It occurs because the patient has a shorter eye than usual or because the cornea and / or lens are less powerful than normal.
Due to this, the rays or light beams join behind the retina, obtaining a blurred image of the focused object.
Farsightedness appears from a young age and may diminish with age. On the other hand, there are patients with low hypermetropic defects that do not need to be graduated in the distance and that are practically asymptomatic.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of hypermetropia vary depending on the patient but one of the main ones is to see close objects blurry.
They may also appear as a symptom of hyperopia:
- Eye pain
- Headache
- Eye fatigue
HOW IS HYPERMETROPIA CORRECTED?
To correct hypermetropia in our ophthalmological clinic we use 2 different methods. After a complete ophthalmological examination to see your level of anomaly or refractive error, an ophthalmologist will let you know the most effective method for your case.
1.- Use of convergent lenses, (positive lenses), by two methods:
Glasses: This is the most common way to correct hyperopia and patients tend to accept this option. The main problem lies in the aesthetics, because depending on the hyperopia the lenses will be more or less thick and amplify the size of the eye. The lenses are thin in their peripheral zone and thick in the centre.
Contact lenses: You get a better vision than with glasses, because they are placed directly on the patient’s cornea, unlike glasses that have a distance between the eye and lens. The main problem with contact lenses is using them correctly and hygiene, because they can lead to conjunctivitis or infections. Sometimes, due to the physiology of the patient’s eye, contact lenses are not an option (Patients with dry eye syndrome).
2.- Refractive surgery for hyperopia operation:
Refractive surgery is the current method used to ametropia. Within it we find 3 different types of surgery to correct hyperopia:
- PRK, LASIK O ICL
TYPES OF FARSIGHTEDNESS SURGERY
PRK: It is characterized by the use of the excimer laser. Two II , working directly on the epithelium, so that it removes about 14 microns of corneal thickness for each dioptre of myopia to be corrected. The main disadvantage is the postoperative , because when treating directly in the epithelium, a wound is generated that must heal. Patients suffer discomfort and vision will not start to be good until 1 week after surgery.
Its main advantage is the postoperative, because when treated below the stroma, the flap acts as a plaster and healing is faster.
Hyperopia surgery with laser for its correction has to be evaluated exhaustively and inform the patient beforehand, since in cases of high graduations we can manifest again the defect of graduation by loss of effect of the laser.
Correction with ICL intraocular lenses: Consists in the implantation of an intraocular lens with the exact prescription of the hypermetrope patient. It is located between the lens and the back of the iris and is a simple surgery. The patient has good vision the day after surgery and these lenses provide excellent visual quality.
