WHAT IS THE RETINA AND THE VITREO?
The retina is a light-sensitive layer located in the back of the eye, that is, in the innermost part of the eye. Its main function is to transform the received light into nerve impulses. These nerve impulses travel through the optic nerve to the brain, where they are transformed into images.
Retinal detachment, known as regmatogen, is usually the most frequent and is caused by tears or tears in the retina. Other less frequent types of detachments are called tractional detachments and exudative detachments (presence of subretinal fluid).
MOST COMMONLY USED TECHNIQUES FOR CURING RETINAL DETACHMENT
Treatment for retinal detachment will depend on the severity of the condition. When the retina has not yet detached but is torn, it can be treated preventively by laser through a photocoagulation procedure, or a cold treatment called cryotherapy.
Once the detachment has occurred, the only possible treatment is retinal surgery or operation. It is recommended to attend the ophthalmologist with any doubt or question.
HOW IS IT TREATED IN OUR CLINIC?
The retinal detachment surgery that we practice in Martínez de Carneros is ambulatory and with local anesthesia. The surgery consists of placing the retina back in a normal anatomical position, which has a quick and effective recovery from detachment.
WHEN IS RETINAL SURGERY NECESSARY?
The most frequent pathologies that require a retina and vitreous operation are retinal detachment, epirretian membrane, macular hole, vitreous hemorrhages in diabetics or ocular trauma.
Retinal detachment surgery should occur as soon as possible after it has been detached. This will ensure greater success.
RETINAL DETACHMENT TREATMENTS
There are different surgical techniques:
- Pneumatic Retinopexy: In order to adhere the retina, an intravitreal gas bubble is used, which will close the retinal rupture. On an outpatient basis, this operation is performed under topical anaesthesia.
- Scleral or extra-scleral surgery: For minor detachments, this surgery aims to close the retinal breaks through an indentation of the scletórica.
- Vitrectomy via pars plana: Through an intraocular connection, the traction of the vitreous is eliminated and the retina is repositioned. After this, a retinopexy with endolaser will have to be performed.
HOW IS THE RETINAL DETACHMENT OPERATION PERFORMED?
Steps:
For the extraction of the vitreous humour we carry out some small incisions in the sclera through which we aspirate it. The vitreous does not regenerate, so it must be replaced by another material, such as, depending on the case, a saline solution, air, gas or silicone oil.
Duration:
Between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the severity of the case.
Postoperative
- There may be temporary inflammation of the eye after surgery, as well as pain or discomfort. It will be necessary to see your doctor to check the condition.
- It will be necessary to see your doctor to check the state of the eye after the operation.
- There are times when traces of air, gas or oil may remain, which will lead to the adoption of certain postures of the head for a month.
- The eye will be inflamed after surgery, as this is a very traumatic surgery.
Recovery Time:
If the answer is favourable, the vision will regenerate during the year following the intervention, although this will depend on each case.
